Remeshok Chetki - Wood Beavertail Edition

The Remeshok chetki are Aroundsquare's modern take on the jointed plate style chetki which are commonly found in Russia. The name Remeshok comes from the Russian word for "strap", reflecting the clean lines of the set.

Our Beavertail Edition of the popular Remeshoks feature an elongated end bead, tapered to a stout thickness at the outer end, and rounded for a comfortable experience. The Beavertails are thus named not because they particularly look like beavertails.. but rather, based on the naming convention for longer, thinner canoe paddles, because they're super slappy (as you'll soon find out), and also, obviously, because Canada, eh. They have a sleek appearance, but it's not just aesthetics. These extended ends have a somewhat surprising effect of locking the ends into place between the fingers. They are narrow enough to slip through the fingers with ease, but when there is tension at an angle, the beads act like a lever. This effectively prevents them from slipping through the fingers when you don’t want them too, and also creates a springiness as the tension is absorbed and released during play.

Details on the wooden editions

The wooden Beavertail Remeshok chetki are gorgeous, light, and slappy. Despite their light weight, they play exceedingly well due to their end-weighted beaver tail end beads.

Being wood, you’ll want to exercise a bit of care with these beauties rather than beating them up too hard. Be very careful with getting them wet or cleaning them, and if you notice the wood getting dry, apply a bit of oil or beeswax to keep it in shape. Our natural materials, the woods, the animal horn, and the jade bodhi seeds are all in the same range as far as durability and care. While the wooden Remeshoks hold up well to prolonged play, the middle beads are very thin where they are drilled through and are likely crack if you abuse them. Imagine them as the equivalent of a dress watch, a gent’s folder, or your “nice” shoes.

Since the Beavertails are longer than any end beads we’ve launched to date, we’ve found it wise to shorten up the length of the joining section between the ends. In our original Remeshok configuration, we used a 20+2 bead setup. For the paddle ended setup, we used 18+2. For the new Beavertail mods, we’ve trimmed it down to 16+2. The overall length in each case is similar.

Green Sandlewood

The green sandalwood has pronounced grain patterns and colour variation, with zig zagging grain patterns along the middle pieces and markedly lighter coloured end pieces, despite being machined from the same blocks of material. The weight of a set of green sandalwood Beavertail Remeshock Chetki is around 16.5g.

Ebony

The Ebony wood is a slightly harder and heavier wood, with a darker and more uniform colour, dense, nicely weighted, and has fantastically smooth grain, making it a joy to handle. The weight of a set of ebony Beavertail Remeshock Chetki is around 20g.
